PROTIP of the Day: If you’re planning on robbing an LA motel, make sure it isn’t full of mixed martial artists in town for the World Jiu-Jitsue No-Gi Championship.

Luis Rosales failed to heed this basic rule before heading into the motel at 300 N. Vermont Ave.

After a clerk handed Rosales the contents of the cash drawer, he followed the robber out of the office to warn two guests that the man was armed. Those guests happened to be 33-year-old MMA studio owner Brent Alvarez and his student, 28-year-old Billy Denney.

They immediately jumped Rosales and put him in a chokehold. Alvarez noted that Rosales didn’t fight back, telling the Los Angeles Times “[h]e wasn’t trying to punch us; he just seemed like someone who had run out of options.” While in a body lock, Rosales had reportedly begged to be let go “so he could kiss the daughter one last time.”

Police officers arrested Rosales, who had a loaded 9mm handgun in his possession.
